Blue Lights
Blue Lights is a visual novel that follows the story of a high school student named Rey during an alien invasion. Like most visual novels, it features manga or anime-inspired art.
Within the visual novel are quick time events and microgames that need to be accomplished successfully before the player can get to the next part of the story. Quick time events are those actions that characters do that players execute, like inserting a key or opening a door.
An example of this microgame is “Brain Storm” which comes up when Rey needs to think about a solution to a particular problem. In it, the player targets a brain that’s moving from side to side with a lightning bolt.
Other microgames include “Run” (to get away from aliens) and “Build Up Power” (to hit them with a bat). There should be many more that we haven’t played, because we’ve only gotten as far as Episode 2 our of all 6 available.
Rey also has an Inventory of objects that can prove to be useful in certain situations.
One of the things we liked about this game is its humor. It’s a little cheesy at times, but we definitely had a few chuckles now and again.
All 6 episodes of Blue Lights are available to play for free on author Jack Astral’s Newgrounds page.
