Bespoke HTML5 Games: Games for Movie Studios
Movie studios spend large chunks of their budgets trying to come up with great marketing strategies. Fans like to be able to interact with their anticipated movies, and a lot of marketing teams are leveraging this fact.
Utilizing Bespoke HTML5 games to promote an upcoming movie can provide the interactivity needed in any good marketing strategy. Here we give you some examples of bespoke games for movie studios’ marketing campaigns.
Ice Age Collision Course Planet Pool
20th Century Fox is one of the trendsetters for movie studios to include Bespoke HTML5 games in their campaigns. For example they used a bespoke HTML5 game as the promotional material for the fourth installment of the Ice Age movie franchise.
The game is called Planet Pool and it is a 2D physics-based game. The gameplay is very similar to billiards, but it uses acorn as the cue ball and the planets as the other balls.
The player moves the mouse to aim the acorn and sets the power of the shot by dragging a small round ship. Releasing the mouse button shoots the acorn. The player has to shoot the planets in order to avoid penalty.

Despicable Me 3 HTML5 Games
Chiquita Brands International and Universal Pictures teamed up to promote Despicable Me 3. They used HTML5 games on the ad campaign’s official website to promote the movie. Games are especially apt in this case, since the Despicable Me franchise targets the younger audiences, most of whom are into playing games.
The three games developed to support the marketing of Despicable Me 3 were:
- Me Me Match 3 Jam: A match 3 game where you have to align 3 or more similar items to eliminate them. The items are made of Despicable Me 3 characters. Players have to accumulate a certain number of points and they have to do the objectives before moving on to the next level.
- Minions Banana Frenzy: A fruit-slicing game where the players have to slice all the bananas and pineapples within a time limit. However, players must avoid the bombs as they will lose points if they accidentally slice the bombs.
- Minions Banana Hop: An endless runner game where players have to go down as fast as possible while avoiding various obstacles. There are also power-ups they can collect to get faster points.
Warner Bros Flintstones Brontosaurus Burger Bites
Warner Bros is one of the biggest entertainment companies in the USA. They also leverage HTML5 games in their marketing campaigns. A good example is their release of a game to promote The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age SmackDown!, a direct-to-video amimated film.
The HTML5 game is called The Flintstones Brontosaurus Burger Bites. It is a Match 3 game where players have to connect 3 or more identical icons to score. Players have to gobble a certain amount of the Brontosaurus Burgers before the time runs out.
Doraemon Gadget Rush
Doraemon is one of the most popular Japanese animated series in the world. A few years ago, they premiered their latest movie, “Stand By Me”.
A game called Doraemon Gadget Rush was launched at the same time the movie premiered. The mechanics are very simple: Players have to drag their fingers to match at least 3 of the same items to form a chain, these items are the faces of the Doraemon’s characters. Of course, the longer the chain, the better.
The selected character would then attack the robot as there will be a battle scene above the matching screen.
